When you have left your bamboo outdoor furniture in the elements for too long, or have recently purchased used bamboo furniture that was left outdoors for long periods of time by the previous owner, you will want to take the time to clean it up and restain it. This will help restore it to almost new condition, and keep you from having to deal with any problems that will arise from leaving the furniture unfinished.
Step #1) Prepare The Furniture – Before you are able to stain the furniture, you are going to need to sand it down. This process is going to take the longest, because of the intricate details most outdoor bamboo furniture sets contain. Make sure that you have all of the tools and materials that you are going to need to finish the bamboo handy, to prevent having to run around while you are doing the work.
Step #2) Take Safety Precautions – Before you begin staining the wood, you are going to want to make sure that you take the furniture outside to stain it. You are also going to want to ensure that you have latex gloves that will prevent the stain from soaking into your skin, potentially making you sick. You will also want to make sure that your pets and children keep away from the furniture until it has had time to dry.
Step #3) Sand The Furniture – After you have taken the necessary safety precautions, you will want to begin sanding down the furniture. Start with a 100 grit sandpaper to remove the larger portions of buildup, and then move down to a 200 grit paper to clean up the rest of the wood. This will help break down the mold, mildew, and dust that has accrued over time, and give you a fresh surface to work with.
Step #4) Stain The Furniture – Now you can get down to the staining process. With your favorite tone of stain, you will want to apply the first coat onto the wood. Make sure that there are not any drips or runs that will cause darker areas on the wood.
Step #5) Apply A Second Coat If Needed – After the first coat has had plenty of time to soak in, you will want to consider adding a second layer for extra protection.
